According to the Scientific Research Center of Yucatan, henequen was domesticated by the Mayans in pre-Hispanic times due to the usefulness of its fibers. Henequen is a plant resistant to drought, pests and diseases, whose leaves grow large, lanceolate and fleshy, bluish white or grayish white, and from which the fiber used in the textile industry is extracted.
In addition to the fiber used to make ropes, strings, sacks, threads, among others, the following are used from this agave: the residue from defibering as fertilizer in areas where the soils are very stony and not very fertile, the leaves that serve as fodder to feed livestock and for their beauty as ornamental plants.
